Also, there were controversies with the Pinewood derby (No, you can't hollow out the bottom of your car and place a lead sinker; even more, you can't just let your dad carve the entire car for you).There should be some sort of GED program for guys like me who dropped out of scouting - some way we can earn our Arrows of Light, etc.

The second half of this book seems to be written in a more lyrical style. It was as if the author became more concerned with his readers becoming put-off with how narrow minded he was treating his subject matter. The writing prose continues to improve as the end draws closer.The first half was very difficult to get past due mainly to its harsh, abrupt, spiteful, and the seemingly endless, over and over again, repetition of the same limited topics. There must be a place in Guinness World Records for a book of this ilk.The author’s primary focus can be summarized a few words; horrible judgments are coming for the non-believers, believers must wage war on unbelievers, god gives guidance and blessings to believers and refrains from giving guidance and blessings to non-believers, non-believers are predestined to eternal hell, there is only one god even though this one god continues to speak in the plural tense, god is merciful and just and again so horrific. These topics are repeated almost every other page for about 300 pages into the book.It seems the writer mellowed-out later in the book. He improved in his methods of expressing himself. However, that being said, he continued to repeat again and again that which had already been stated more than adequately.
He did add a little more flare with references to historical examples of just how cruel his god has been.A just and merciful god, you would think, would be more loving of all creations and not just of his “believers”, those outwardly claiming to obey his commandments. I wager even believers “sin” from time to time, eh?
Thank God I try to live a good life for the joy and love I receive for so doing. Pity those that live their lives out of fear of retribution for the commitment of any “designated” error.?For a good description of the hell consigned to females as described in this book, refer to numbered paragraph 78:31. I didn’t read this book word by word, but I did scan through it and read the outline of the different chapters. The idea behind Boy Scouts is not really that different to religion or any other ideology. It is not important what the idea is, everyone thinks their idea is best and their way of living is the right one, the important thing is how do we get other people to follow it. To convince and change the lives of adults is difficult, but getting them young is much easier. This handbook gives very practical lessons to young men, and here is where I think the west is ahead of us. While we might have organizations for young people in the middle east, these are usually heavily invested in our religion, and there is very little practical brainwashing of young boys and girls so that when they grow up, they can achieve better things, rather than be nice little Muslim adults. I was pleased to find that I knew most of the information simply from being a Scout throughout my life (this shows that I had some good leaders along the way) and I feel that I truly have benefited from this knowledge while backpacking, giving service to others, etc. This is one of the best primers for anyone who would like to gain more knowledge of how to be self-sufficient in nature, whether you're associated with BSA or not. I didn't give it a 5-star rating simply because I felt that there were some areas that felt antiquated (such as not mentioning ultralight backpacking among others). So, you wouldn't reckon the Boy Scout Handbook needs reviewing, but by gum I'm going to review it anyway. This book is, of course, necessary to go up the ranks in the BSA, containing as it does 'The Trail to Eagle.'

This 11th edition is about to be replaced this year or next by the new centennial 12th edition. I grew up with the 6th, that was out from.
