The creditsearned through Running Start counts toward high school graduation requirements ANDa college degree. Students take classes for different reasons.: Take college level classes that transfer to a University.: Take college level classes that give you job skills for moving directly into theworkforce and count towards a Certificate of Completion, or an Associates degree ina technical/professional area.: Take one or two college level classes to experience the college campus and see whatcollege is like. Be enrolled in a public high school. Home-schooled students will either enroll throughtheir local public high school or school district. Private school students can havedual enrollment at both private and public high schools for access to Running Startclasses.
Be a junior or senior according to their high school. Qualify at college level English. College level math placement is not required foradmission to the program. However, students who plan to enroll in math and most sciencescourses through Running Start must place at college level math. High school graduation requirements are established by the high school.
Each quarter,students meet with their high school counselor to identify how TCC courses will applytoward graduation. Students with high school grade-point-averages of less than 2.50 are admitted, butmay be advised to enroll in a college success course their first quarter in the program.Students at Tacoma Community College must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above and completeall courses. If a student falls below academic standard, they are placed on a seriesof warning, probation, and then suspension from the program.Back to top. What are the enrollment steps?
STEP 1: APPLY. Select “Running Start” for Admit Type.STEP 2: ASSESSOnce you have received your TCC Student ID#,. For the Tacoma campus, call 253.566.5158 for an automated message of testing datesand times (no appointment necessary) or the Gig Harbor campus at 253.460.2424 (appointmentrequired).The Tacoma campus Assessment office is located in bldg. For practice tests andwebsites, click on the Assessment office link above and then the Accuplacer link onthat page. On the day of the test, tell them you are testing for Running Start. Thetesting fee is $18, payable with a credit card online or at the Cashier’s office (cash,check or money orders ONLY) in Bldg. If you are eligible for a fee waiver.
Contactthe Running Start office for details.The testing examiner will explain your results after you finish the test. If you donot qualify, retesting options will be provided as well as suggestions for reviewmaterials.You may also use Smarter Balance (SBAC) scores of level 3 or 4 or SAT scores (Reading/writingaverage of 470 or above) for placement into the program.

Once complete, turn in your packet to the RunningStart office in Bldg. 7.STEP 4: ORIENTATIONWhen you turn in your Enrollment packet you will be scheduled for a Running StartNew Student Orientation.STEP 5: REGISTER FOR CLASSESAfter completing the orientation, you will be eligible to register for classes.We encourage students and parents to attend a Running Start information session forgeneral information. What if I'm home schooled?. Home schooled students of junior or senior status are encouraged to take advantageof Running Start. You may attend full time or part time and take classes that wouldbe used toward an Associate degree.
Home school students can enroll through their local high school or school districtoffice. Enrollment process for home school students varies by school district, sobe sure to contact the Running Start office (253.566.6061) for more information.
Homeschool students are not required to meet high school graduation requirements. To qualify for Running Start, home schoolers must place at college level in Englishon TCC’s assessment test. We don’t require college level math placement for admissionto the program unless you plan to enroll in math and science courses through RunningStart. In that case, you must also place at college level math. To qualify for free tuition, you need to enroll through your local high school orschool district office and have filed an Intent for Home-Based Instruction the year prior to accessing Running Start. Note that students are required to payfor class and campus fees and for books. Assistance is available to students who qualifyfor free or reduced lunch.

If home-schooled students begin in the fall of their junior year, they are entitledto six quarters (fall, winter, and spring of junior and senior years). Likewise, youenroll in the fall of your senior year, you are entitled to three quarters of theprogram. I want to go to a 4-year school. Will my Running Start credits transfer?. Transfer credits: College credits are transferable to Washington State public collegesand universities, and to most private colleges in the state, with the exception ofthe University of Puget Sound. We strongly recommend that students consult with collegeadmissions representatives and departmental advisors as early as possible.
Studentsshould contact out-of-state colleges for their policies on accepting Running Startcredits. We will be happy to provide information to other schools about the program. Baccalaureate Applicants: All Running Start students who plan to apply to baccalaureateinstitutions should take the SAT and/or ACT tests with their high school class tocomply with college admission requirements. We strongly encourage students to maintainclose contact with their high schools for SAT/ACT testing dates, application deadlinesand scholarship information in preparation for admission to four year institutions.Back to top.
How is Running Start different from TCC in the High School? Tacoma Community College is covered under FERPA (Federal Education Right to PrivacyAct) and follows federal guidelines concerning access to student records. We are notallowed to give information regarding a student's attendance or progress (even ifthe student is under 18 years of age).
According to state law, we do not identifyRunning Start students to their instructors.Faculty will not discuss a student's progress with anyone without the student's participation.Students are expected to conduct themselves like college students.Release forms are available through the Running Start office and must be given tothe Running Start advisor for parents to have access to student records such as classschedule and grades. Running Start advisors do not have access to information aboutattendance or performance in courses until grades are submitted at the end of thequarter.Back to top. Although a student is academically prepared for college-levelcourse work, he/she may find the independence necessary for a successful experiencetoo demanding.
Students are starting a permanent college transcript when they takethe first college class. If they perform poorly, they may jeopardize future collegeplans. Parents and students should carefully evaluate readiness.Running Start classes place an increased demand on students, so it is important tomonitor their class loads. Running Start students should be enrolled full-time betweenthe high school and college, but should not over-enroll or take too few classes. The pace of college classes is much fasterthan in the high school. For example, a high school math class taught in one yearat the high school is taught in 10 weeks at the college. College classes demand approximatelytwo hours of homework for each hour spent in class.On the first day of class, instructors provide a course syllabus with their emailaddress, office location and hours and phone numbers.
